S2 E27 (July 13-19) “Plant This Word in Your Hearts”

LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE! Or maybe it's "Let's get ready to be HUMBLE!" 🤷😂

This week we talk about the Zoramites and their humility, how Alma's sermon on faith has some echoes of the creation story from Genesis (and even the temple!) and how we can worship God anytime, anywhere.

Alma 32:1–16

I can choose to be humble.

Alma perceived that the poor Zoramites were humble and “in a preparation to hear the word” (Alma 32:6). As you read Alma 32:1–16, think about how you prepare to hear the word of God.

What experiences have humbled you?

  • Realizing I needed help with mental health

  • Being a parent

  • Anytime I’m wrong!

What have you done to become more humble?

  • Take a step back and recognize that I might be wrong

  • Ask for help

  • PODCAST!

These verses could teach you how to choose humility rather than be compelled to be humble. For example, what is the difference between being “poor as to things of the world” and being “poor in heart”? (verse 3).

Alma 32: 3 Therefore they were not permitted to enter into their synagogues to worship God, being esteemed as filthiness; therefore they were poor; yea, they were esteemed by their brethren as adross; therefore they were bpoor as to things of the world; and also they were poor in heart.

We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed …. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory (2 Corinthians 4:8–9, 17)

What does it mean to “humble [yourself] because of the word”? (verse 14).

Alma 32:14 And now, as I said unto you, that because ye were compelled to be ahumble ye were blessed, do ye not suppose that they are more blessed who truly humble themselves because of the word?

Humility,” Gospel Topics, topics.ChurchofJesusChrist.org.

To be humble is to recognize gratefully our dependence on the Lord—to understand that we have constant need for His support. Humility is an acknowledgment that our talents and abilities are gifts from God. It is not a sign of weakness, timidity, or fear; it is an indication that we know where our true strength lies. We can be both humble and fearless. We can be both humble and courageous.”

Alma 32:17–43; 33–34

I exercise faith in Jesus Christ by planting and nourishing His word in my heart.

Alma 33:2–11; 34:17–29

I can worship God in prayer, anytime and anywhere.

Alma and Amulek’s counsel about worship and prayer was meant to correct specific misunderstandings the Zoramites had (see Alma 31:13–23). But the truths they taught can help any us of understand prayer and worship better. Maybe you could make a list of truths about prayer that you find in Alma 33:2–11 and 34:17–29. Next to that list, make a list of possible misconceptions about prayer that these truths correct (see Alma 31:12–23). How will the things you learn from these verses affect the way you pray and worship?

Alma 33:3–17

Who were Zenos and Zenock?

Zenos and Zenock were prophets who testified of Jesus Christ during Old Testament times, but their teachings are not found in the Old Testament. The Nephites had access to the teachings of these prophets, probably because they were included in the brass plates that Nephi obtained from Laban. They are also mentioned in 1 Nephi 19:10–12; Jacob 5:1; and Helaman 8:19–20.
