We've hit the middle of 1 Corinthians y'all! This week we talk about how to escape temptation, recognizing spiritual gifts (even ones we hadn't ever thought of as spiritual), and how Paul sorts the Hogwarts Houses.

This week I use the info from the Gospel Topics article "Spiritual Gifts".  Find it here: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/gospel-topics/spiritual-gifts?lang=eng

"Spiritual gifts are blessings or abilities given by God to His children through the power of the Holy Ghost. Gifts of the Spirit are given to bless and benefit those who love the Lord and seek to keep His commandments. (See Doctrine and Covenants 46:9.)

Each faithful member of the Church has at least one spiritual gift, and the Lord encourages His children to “seek … earnestly the best gifts, always remembering for what they are given” (Doctrine and Covenants 46:8). The scriptures teach of many gifts of the Spirit:

  • Knowledge “that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that he was crucified for the sins of the world” (Doctrine and Covenants 46:13).
  • The capacity to believe the words of those who testify of Jesus Christ (see Doctrine and Covenants 46:14).
  • Knowledge of “the differences of administration” (Doctrine and Covenants 46:15; see also 1 Corinthians 12:5). This gift is used in administering and leading the Church.
  • Knowledge of “the diversities of operations,” which helps individuals discern whether a teaching or influence comes from God or from some other source (Doctrine and Covenants 46:16; see also 1 Corinthians 12:6–7).
  • The gift of “the word of wisdom” (1 Corinthians 12:8; Doctrine and Covenants 46:17). This does not refer to the law known as the Word of Wisdom (see Doctrine and Covenants 89). Rather, it is the gift of wisdom—the ability to use knowledge in righteous ways.
  • The gift of “the word of knowledge” (1 Corinthians 12:8; Doctrine and Covenants 46:18).
  • The ability to teach by the power of the Holy Ghost (see Moroni 10:9–10; see also Doctrine and Covenants 46:18).
  • The gift of faith (see 1 Corinthians 12:9; Moroni 10:11).
  • The gift “to have faith to be healed” (Doctrine and Covenants 46:19).
  • The gift “to have faith to heal” (Doctrine and Covenants 46:20; see also 1 Corinthians 12:9; Moroni 10:11).
  • “The working of miracles” (1 Corinthians 12:10; Doctrine and Covenants 46:21; see also Moroni 10:12).
  • The gift of prophecy (see 1 Corinthians 12:10; Moroni 10:13; Doctrine and Covenants 46:22). The Apostle John taught that “the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” (Revelation 19:10).
  • “The beholding of angels and ministering spirits” (Moroni 10:14).
  • “Discerning of spirits” (1 Corinthians 12:10; Doctrine and Covenants 46:23).
  • The gift to speak in different languages, or tongues (see 1 Corinthians 12:10; Moroni 10:15; Doctrine and Covenants 46:24).
  • The gift of “the interpretation of tongues” (1 Corinthians 12:10; Doctrine and Covenants 46:25; see also Moroni 10:16).

These spiritual gifts and others listed in the scriptures are only some examples of the many gifts of the Spirit. The Lord blesses His children in many ways according to their faithfulness and their needs and the needs of those they serve.

Let's talk about running, shall we?

1 Corinthians 9:24–27

24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:

27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

This is the book I talk about: The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer by David A. Whitsett

"Athlete. Runner. Marathoner. Are these words you wouldn't exactly use to describe yourself? Do you consider yourself too old or too out of shape to run a marathon? But somewhere deep inside have you always admired the people who could reach down and come up with the mental and physical strength to complete such a daunting and rewarding accomplishment? It doesn't have to be somebody else crossing the finish line. You can be a marathoner. The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer is based on the highly successful marathon class offered by the University of Northern Iowa, which was featured in a Runner's World article titled "Marathoning 101." The class has been offered five times over 10 years, and all but one student finished the marathon. That is approximately 200 students -- all first time marathoners and many with absolutely no running background. This book follows the same 16-week, four-day-a-week workout plan. What makes the success rate of this program so much higher than any other? The special emphasis on the psychological aspects of endurance activities. You don't have to love to run -- you don't even have to like it -- but you have to realize that you are capable of more than you have ever thought possible. One participant in the program explained it like this: "I'm doing this for me -- not for others or the time clock. I just feel better when I run, plus it helps me to cope with things in general. The skills we've learned in this class don't apply just to marathoning -- they apply to life! Just like you never know what the next step in a marathon will bring, so too, you never know what will happen next in life. But if you don't keep going, you're never going to find out. By staying relaxed, centered, and positive you handle just about anything that comes your way." This is marathon running for real people, people with jobs and families and obligations outside of running. The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer has proven successful for men and women of all ages. Now let it work for you."
